PRESS RELEASE
National
Douglass Alumni Corporation (NDAC) awarded $24,975.00 to eighty-four (84) studentsÕ
fifty (50) scholarships and thirty-four (34) book
allowances to students enrolled in college.
The
National Douglass Alumni Corporation provides scholarships to eligible
graduating seniors of active Douglass High School alumnus.
In
1985 the
NDAC began giving scholarships to an alumni sponsored graduating senior. After
a time scholarships were given to graduates of Kingsbury and Craigmont who were
connected to a NDAC financial member as we thought they would have graduated
from Douglass High School had it not closed.
Funding
for scholarships is derived from Alumni classes and supporters who make annual pledges
to build an endowment for the scholarship fund. NDAC has been responsible for giving scholarships to
students from Douglass High School for over twenty-eight years even after the Douglass
High School closed in 1981.
In
November of 2008 three friends of NDAC, Mayor A. C. Wharton, then Shelby County
Mayor, Congressman Steve Cohen and Dr. Ada Jane Walters, former principal of
Craigmont High School presented to the Douglass High School Principal Mrs.
Janet W. Thompson a check in the sum of $500.00 each. This year, plans are to award each graduate a scholarship. All
students are eligible if sponsored by a qualified NDAC member. We accept monetary
donations of any size to help reach our goal of $160,000. All contributions are tax deductible
and can be made to:
